Philosophy of Teaching
I decided to become a teacher in High School. I attended Green Hope High School in Cary, North Carolina, and I learned a lot there about what I wanted to be. I had always and a passion for history, and I was always excited and engaged in every history class I ever took. However, I learned as I went along in high school, that every history teacher did not really care about the subject. Most teachers were coaches that just needed a teaching job in order to stay a coach, and therefore would place a book in front of kids, and make them take a quiz. The blatant disrespect for the subject that I deeply cared about my whole life hurt me to my core. After making my realization, I started to create the idea in my head that I could become a history teacher, and show other teachers and students how amazing History is, and how important it is to learn. I think that most students will take very little interest in history later in life, and high school is where they will get their most memorable history classes. I want to be the teacher that gets students involved in history, and makes them realize how important the topic is not only in school, but also in relation to their life. I want students to look at history as fun and exciting, as opposed to some sort of Gen Ed that they can sleep their way through.

Through History education, I will be able to teach my students to study and research topics, as well as find accurate sources to reinforce their opinions. They will be looking at multiple viewpoints throughout history in order to be able to form their own opinions on topics and events, and will be able to relate the ideas they learn to the real world. The students will learn new ways to read, write, and present information effectively in order to get their points across in the best way possible. Using the abilities they have learned in this class, my students will be able to go on with their own interests later in life, and be better able to pursue their favorite topics with the skills and knowledge they have gained throughout my course.

Overall, my goal through teaching is to get students to not only realize the importance of history in their lives, but to take what they have learned with them later in life. I want them to be able to look at multiple viewpoints before forming their own opinions in order to make the most well founded and accurate statements. I want them to be able to research and write effectively in order to express themselves in and out of the classroom. Most importantly, I want students to truly understand the value of history education and its application to their lives.
